For new and upcoming bands, what is important is to be prepared.  Breaking into the mainstream music industry will happen but you have to be prepared for it.  Make sure that you perfect your music and you have your repertoire ready.  Keep yourself exposed as much as possible.  Exposure and promotion are two words to keep in mind.
