Shows, no matter how small, can help you boost your career in the music industry. Small gigs serve as your stepping stones. Performing in one does not only add up to your portfolio but makes you seasoned artists as well.

Some of the most popular bands today were discovered while performing in places where the presence of talent scouts or managers were unexpected. Your gig just might be their next stop. So, perform like you have never before and catch their attention.

Small-time gigs are referred to as that because of the size of the venue and the amount paid for the band’s talent fee are relatively small. They are incomparable to what the posh hotels and big restaurants can offer but still, there are several groups who grab small bookings because they still pay the bills and serve as a venue for them to be heard and be seen by more people which would count a lot in terms of exposure.

Discipline can go a long way. Bands whose members possess this very important trait are sure to make it to the top. Those who do not have this will never make it. In fact, the lack of discipline is sometimes the reason why members part ways. Make an extra effort to not be one of them. Here are some helpful tips.
1. Be punctual and arrive on your gigs on time. Do the same on your band’s practice sessions.
2. Be mindful of band rehearsals. Group rehearsals are very important to fine tune everything before the gig.
3. Take all the necessary precautions to preserve your voice.
4. Do not mix work with pleasure. Doing both at the same time might bring downfall to your career.

Get A Manager

Most bands have a manager while others prefer to get bookings on their own. A number of successful bands (those who are always fully booked) today have managers who scout opportunities for them. These managers get a percentage of the band’s earnings. Find out how getting a manager can help your band’s career.
1. The manager can do all the dirty work for you – from scouting venues to fee negotiations.
2. The manager can take care of everything that you need before, during and after the show. You and your band can then focus all your attention on your performance.
3. The manager can observe the crowd’s reactions on your performance while you are still doing it on the stage.

If you’re tired of bands with lots of members in it, why don’t you check out Idiot Pilot? Idiot Pilot is a duo band (yep, two members only!) that tag themselves as an electronica or rock group.

The band was risk taker indeed. They released their first album entitled “Strange We Should Meet Here” without a record label to support them. After Reprise Records heard their performance, Resprise signed them and helped them release their second album, “Wolves” which hit big in the music market. Today, although they’re greek to mainstream music, they have performed tours with some of the most prominent rock bands such as The Used and The Smashing Pumpkins.

whiteliesThere are a lot of shining talents who enter the music scene from humble beginnings with most coming from small time and even evangelic backgrounds. The new British band White lies however comes from a totally opposite region of Arcade Fire and Coldplay bringing music of the deathly type. They have managed to catch the attention of rockers in England but the threesome group admits thought they love their art, it is very draining on the soul, for real. The three members, Harry McVeigh on vocals, bassist and lyricist Charles cave and drummer Jack Lawrence-Brown all agree on the utter soul draining direction of their music.
Thought their music may be dark themed, they are other than dark for they help break the ice from their grim songs with humor on and off stage. This keeps us in touch with reality as it is and keeps our minds off the music which can get into your skin most of the times. The group is one of Britain’s rising metal bands who are catching attention from critics, just hope they were a bit more wholesome like the rest of the band.

The Maine

The band was formed in 2007 with three members who were all in their individual bands all throughout high school. They got their name from the song “The Coast of Maine” from a band named Ivory which influenced them greatly and kinda’ stuck them together to get down and make their own music. They got a break when they signed on to Fearless Records in late 2007 resulting in them releasing their new album “The Way we Talk”. One of their first music videos “Everything I Ask For”, came out with Lindsey Lohan’s feature film “Labor pains”. They have tours with other bands beginning next year as they make their mark on the music scene along with the 2009 Vans Warped Tour, and event they also participated in 2008.

Mogwai had no other option but to cancel the scheduled live concerts. The upcoming band had been pressured to postpone the said events, specially the remaining North American tours
because of Martin Bulloch’s health failing as they worked themselves out. The drummer was immediately rushed to a hospital after the band’s gig in New York last September 21. Bulloch was taken to the hospital from their All Tomorrow’s Parties show after he experienced trouble with the pacemaker he had inside him. This wasnt the first time he felt dizzy. In the entire duration of the tour he was complaining about his condition. Unfortunately it ended up into him being sent to the emergency room. He feared he might have to undergo corrective surgery but thankfully that did not push through, the doctors adviced him to go back home to Scotland and see his cardiologist there.

No Means No

Lovely Victoria, British Columbia, a charming city on the water visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year — perhaps not the place you’d expect to find one of the weirder and smarter punk bands around today. Or perhaps exactly the sort of place you’d expect to find such a band. In any case, it’s the place No Means No calls home. Possibly Canada’s preeminent power trio, No Means No have been abrading delicate ears with their complex rhythm-heavy funk-punk and promulgating leftist social commentary across North America since 1981. That was the year a couple of nice Canadian boys, brothers John and Rob Wright, formally began their strange sonic experiments that fused punk with blues, jazz, funk, metal, and pure noise.

Rhythms and declamatory lyrics dominated their sound, a situation that remains true today after two decades of developing their sound. The Wright brothers added a guitarist — first Andrew Kerr and later Tom Holliston — but the slashing, sometimes bluesy guitar parts have always seemed to work at the service of the band’s complicated rhythms, not the other way around. Rob’s deep chugging bass is usually the biggest sound in the mix and John’s jarring, polyrhythmic drumming is a lot more sophisticated than most of the percussion you hear in rock music. The brothers share vocals, which range from forceful spoken word speak-sing to Jello Biafra-style demented rants, only occasionally approaching anything like melody. Tricky, confrontational music, but if you appreciate it, consistently rewarding.

Rosetta, yet another band classified under the genres post-hardcore, drone and ambient types of music. The band members cited Stars of Lid as their major influence and are described by many as having a “space metal” touch in their music. If we can remember, Rosetta was a UFO sighting area in the United States and this probably is the inspiration of the band’s name.

All of the band members knew it other since High school and were members of other bands prior to their formation in 2003. After that, they eventually decided to do a gig of their own, thus Rosetta was born.

GLASVEGAS

Glasvegas was given a description of badly behaved with their kind of music. They started as underground band until they were recognized with in their type of sound. Glasvegas have in use the wide-eyed optimism of the Libertines but have stimulated music to the fore. No admiration they’re riding far above the ground in the mid-weeks, and are set to cross the threshold  of the weekly Top 10 every Sunday.  Though this band is eccentric, not many are like them. Their vocalist, James has a exceptional remarkable voice added to quality riffs from Paul and Rab, and Caroline drumming directly to a sound that provides me shiver while performing.
